Mood Disorders (Affect emotions and energy levels)
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A severe condition where a person experiences constant sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in daily activities. Symptoms include fatigue, sleep disturbances, and suicidal thoughts.
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia)
A long-term but less intense form of depression lasting at least two years. The person may feel constantly low, but they can still function.
Bipolar Disorder (I & II)
Causes extreme mood swings between manic episodes (high energy, risky behavior) and depressive episodes (low energy, sadness). Bipolar I has severe mania, while Bipolar II has milder mania (hypomania).
Cyclothymic Disorder
A milder form of bipolar disorder where mood swings occur frequently but are not as extreme.
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD)
A childhood disorder where kids have severe temper outbursts that are much greater than expected for their age.
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
A severe form of PMS where women experience intense mood swings, depression, and anxiety before their menstrual cycle.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Depression that occurs during specific seasons (usually winter) due to lack of sunlight.
Atypical Depression
A form of depression where mood improves with positive events, but the person still experiences sadness, fatigue, and oversleeping.
